Napster, the grandfather of p2p (person to person) networks, is born. Napster allowed the direct transfer of files from one computer to another, without any costs to either party. This p2p network caused a huge file-sharing war to erupt later between Napster itself and various Copywrite holders (whose mp3s, programs, etc. were being dispersed without their control, or their abiltity to gain money from it). Most active in this battle was the Record Industry, whose music was constantly being traded and swapped through the Napster networking.
